Service works to promote safety to businesses

Staff from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service have been visiting local businesses across the region this week to give advice and information as part of UK Business Safety Week 2017.

The week runs from 11th - 17th September and aims to make sure businesses and their staff have the information they need to prevent, protect and respond to fire incidents in the workplace.

Kevin Jones, Community Safety Manager for Conwy and Denbighshire, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, explains: “The week has been scheduled to run at a time when many businesses will be recruiting additional members of seasonal staff in the run up to the Christmas period.

“New recruits may not have the same level of fire safety awareness as permanent members of staff, and may not be aware of the steps needed to protect themselves, their customers and colleagues. It’s also a good opportunity to remind employers of the need to review fire risk assessments and training and make sure existing staff know the importance of fire safety.”

Fire and Rescue services across the region are asking businesses to ensure they have taken action to prevent fires in the workplace, that they have taken action to protect themselves from arson, that they make sure all staff know how to respond appropriately in the event of an incident and that they work with their local fire and rescue service to reduce false alarms and enforcement notices.

Kevin added: “Compliance with the law means you are protecting your business, premises and employees. It also means you are likely to be prepared if the worst does happen and a fire occurs at your business. If you are a business owner or responsible for a business premises the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order means legally you must reduce the risk of fire and make sure people can safely escape in the event of a fire. Non compliance can lead to enforcement which could result in a financial, legal and reputational risk to your business.”
