Highlighting national safety campaigns in Gwersyllt, Wrexham

Posted

Staff from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service visited Gwersyllt CP School in Wrexham this morning in support of two national safety campaigns.

Both campaigns are running across the whole of Wales - Child Safety Week (1-7 June) is an annual campaign by the Child Accident Prevention Trust to raise awareness of the risks of child accidents and how they can be prevented, and GoSafe is highlighting the "20mph Rule Outside Schools" to educate drivers about the importance of adhering to the relevant limit.

Brian Williams from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We are keen to encourage parents, guardians or carers to think about how they can safeguard children and how failure to keep within the 20mph limit puts children at risk, and leaves drivers liable to prosecution."

GoSafe is focusing enforcement around 20mph areas outside schools throughout June to increase compliance to the speed limit and contribute to the safety of the roads in Wales.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) while there is a 20% chance of fatal injury when someone is hit by a car travelling at 30mph, this reduces to just 2.5% if the car is travelling at 20mph.

Brian said: "The school visit involved staff from our Revolution Project, which is a joint initiative between North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and North Wales Police offering a proactive approach to road safety education. We wanted to help road users to stop, think and kill their speed, encouraging all local people who use the roads to have greater respect for one another and  their surrounding community.

"We are also keen to help residents keep the whole family safe in the home by ensuring they have a working smoke alarm.

"We offer free home fire safety checks during which we will provide fire safety hints and tips, help you formulate a fire escape plan and where necessary, fit new smoke alarms -  contact our freephone number on 0800 169 1234 or e-mail cfs@nwales-fireservice.org.uk."
