Fifth firefighters strike ends and it’s ‘back to normal service’

Posted

The scheduled four hour period of industrial action by firefighters inEnglandandWalescame to an end at 10pm tonight (Friday December 13).

The strike was the fifth period of industrial action planned by the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) as a protest against Government plans for pensions. Another period of strike action is planned for tomorrow night (Saturday December 14) from 6pm until 10pm.

Chief Fire Officer Simon Smith reported that North Wales Fire and Rescue Service had managed its services effectively during the strike action.

"A strike such as this obviously results in a reduction in the resources that we had at our disposal, however our business continuity plans were put into operation effectively and as soon as the strike period came to an end we were able to ensure a quick and safe return to normal services.

"I would again take this opportunity to thank the public for their cooperation and for heeding our safety messages - our attendance was required at two fires during the four hour period. These were an unattended bonfire involving timber in a field at Rhydymwyn, Mold at 19.17hrs and a dishwasher fire in a property on Ullswater Road, Buckley at 19.54hrs. All occupants were unhurt and no fire damage was caused to the property.

"Although this strike is over, another is scheduled for 6pm - 10pm tomorrow evening so I would remind people that attention to fire safety and road safety remains of paramount importance."
